Following on the practice from the previous year, papers in this special issue were vigorously selected for presentation in the symposium held at The University of Hong Kong in August 2004. All the papers selected for presenta- tion were debated on enthusiastically by participants from all over the world. They were then modiﬁed and reviewed. Those that survived this process were the ones that made it into this issue. Besides the authors (and those acknowledged by the authors), each paper was contributed, in one way or another, by all symposium participants and reviewers. We would like to thank the all symposium participants, reviewers, paper selection committee for their contribution.
