Guest Editor This special section of Psychiatric Quarterly presents a group of papers derived from a conference of the same name, which took place at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY, on September 27, 2002. This gathering of national, regional and local experts provided a forum promoting coordination of criminal justice and mental health services to reduce unnecessary incarceration for individuals with men- tal illness. Keynote presentations were given by seminal researchers in the ﬁeld of criminal justice diversion including, Henry J. Steadman, Ph.D., President, Policy Research Associates, Inc. and H. Richard Lamb, M.D., Director, Division of Mental Health Policy and Law, University of Southern California.
