This article examines the latest innovations from the NPP “Vulkan-TM” for stopper-less casting and the treat
ment of steel outside the furnace. It presents the main characteristics and design features of slide gates, equip
ment for the bottom-blowing of steel with argon, and equipment for making vibroformed refractory products.
Keywords: refractories, sectional lining, ramming mix, slide gates, bottom-injection plugs, mixers.
The “Vulkan-TM” Scientific-Industrial Association has
been involved in the design of the newest generation of
steel-casting systems and refractories for more than 15 years,
and the ongoing needs of metallurgical plants and foundries
have shaped the direction of this work. The characteristics
intrinsic to the operation of small, innovative companies
such as Vulkan-TM require them to be highly active in the
market and take advantage of their flexibility and ability to
quickly react to changes in the market. Thus, small compa
nies often turn out to be the creators of new products and
new technologies that find their way into various sectors of
Vulkan-TM has been able to gain a secure foothold in the
market for steel-casting equipment in large part because it
comes up with innovative, competitive products that are de
veloped on the basis of sound scientific principles. The in
creasing use of science-intensive technologies in recent years
has made it possible to increase the output of shaped and
bulk refractories by a factor of 3 – 4 (Fig. 1) and master the
production of new types of products. The charts clearly show
the levels of production of refractories during and after the
recent severe recession. The types of products made by the
association since its founding have not lost any market value,
and work is continuing on their improvement and expansion
of their ranges of application by customers.
The development and production of competitive prod-
ucts — including products that can take the place of imports
— is the association’s main area of activity. Its VTM- and
