He has discovered interclonal variability of cell susceptibility to lethal and mutagenic action of nitrous acid and revealed the unstable factor (mitochon- drial genome), causing this instability (Devin, Kol- tovaya, 1983). A priority result of Aleksandr Devin studies is also the detection of genetic determination of low stability of Saccharomycetes mitochondrial genome (Devin, Koltovaya, 1981). The isolated genes, including identi- fied genes CDC28, NET1, and HFI1, occupy a high position in the hierarchy of general genetic regulation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and coordinate stability of both mitochondrial and nuclear genomes (Devin, Kol- tovaya, 1981; Koltovaya et al., 2003).
