The three books reviewed in this essay move beyond surface-level discussions of immigration issues as either "for" or "against" by highlighting the complex dynamics of the U.S.-Mexico border and how it shapes the everyday lives of the individuals living on either side of the boundary. From different vantage points, these texts detail the contradictory immigration policies that have emerged over historical periods, as well as the uneven practices in the enforcement of these policies.
