JUBILEES OF THE ZOOLOGICAL INSTITUTE Ichthyological and Zoogeographic Frontiers of A. P. Andriyashev (On His 90th Birthday) of his scientific talent was displayed—that of an obser- vant and keen experimenter in the area of behavior and functional morphology of animals. Many important results of these investigations were published in “Zoo- logicheskii Zhurnal” in the years 1944–1946. In 1951, he defended the doctoral dissertation and, from its materials, wrote a book “Ryby severnykh morei SSSR” (Fish of the Northern Seas of the USSR) (1954), which is among the classics in ichthyology. The scientific activities of A.P. Andriyashev are extraordinarily wide, and his services in the sciences are enormous. He is the author of a great number of fundamental theories on the biogeography and ecology of the world oceans. Among them are a conception of ancient deep-water and secondary deep-water species (1953); hypotheses on the origin of the bipolar, amphiboreal, and amphipacific distribution of animals (1962) and on the origin of fauna of isolated depths (pseudobathyal and pseudoabyssal) and of the oceanic bathyal zone lacking a shelf
