The Dutch Association of Plastic Surgeons celebrates its 50th anniversary in the year 2000. Reconstructive procedures were practiced long ago by some general surgeons. Outstanding and innovative contributions were made by Jan Esser during World War I, even though Holland was not then a belligerent country and kept a strictly neutral position. Esser was an innovator; arterial flaps, rotation flaps of the cheek, Esser inlays and even the expression ”island flap” were all introduced by him and remain in use to this day. During World War II the surgeon Carel Koch was converted to plastic surgery by McIndoe. After the war, the Dutch triumvirate Koch, Raadsveld and Honig started plastic surgery in Holland, leading to its official recognition in 1950, with the establishment of a Dutch Association of Plastic Surgeons (NVPC). At present, there are 144 plastic surgeons in Holland and 33 trainees.
