USED FOR METAL POURING

High-alumina concretes have been developed in OOO MetOgneupor for the production of objects for siphon
steel pouring. Information is provided about the objects developed and their operating experience under ZAO
MRK (mechanical repair unit) OAO MMK conditions.

OOO MetOgneupor is a young dynamically developing
enterprise. A colossal amount of work has been carried out in
the enterprise: assembly, installation and start-up into opera-
tion of a modern automatic line for production of refractory
concretes and mixes (Fig. 1); a physicochemical laboratory
has been organized and equipped making it possible to moni-
tor the whole production process, i.e. from input monitoring
of raw materials to control of the final product quality. A sec-
tion has been put into operation for producing objects by vi-
bration casting from different refractory concretes. The range
of products is unlimited due to the possibility of manufactur
ing objects of any configuration and overall dimensions.
Together with ZAO MRK OAO MMK work has been
carried out for replacing chamotte objects for siphon steel
pouring made of VGB-85 components if high-alumina com
position manufactured by vibration casting. The quality of
the refractory materials used for the siphon steel pouring
method determines to a significant extent the quality of the
steel ingots obtained. Chemical interaction with steel and
mechanical scouring of refractory objects for siphon steel
pouring are the reasons for steel contamination with non-me
tallic inclusions, worsening their mechanical, electrical engi
neering, anticorrosion and other properties.
Specific features of the service of objects for siphon steel
pouring are severe thermal shock, chemical reaction, and
abrasive wear. Chamotte refractories with good heat resis
tance do not withstand abrasive wear and chemical reaction
with metal, since they exhibit structural inhomogeneity, re
content (45%), that affect the physico
mechanical properties of a refractory and its application tem
perature (1450°c). Chamotte refractories are rapidly impreg-
nated with metal, as a result of which there is breaking of
them, and particles of refractory material extracted by the
molten metal stream are carried into an ingot contaminating
steel with exogenic inclusions.
