Heat-insulating mullite-cordierite materials made from staurolite Staurolite is regarded as a waste product in the technology that is used to process kyanite ores. Studies were made of features of the carbothermic reduction of the ferruginous and alumosilicate parts of a charge containing staurolite concentrate. Reactions that take place in the system Al2O3–SiO2–FeO–C result in the in situ formation of silicon carbide and iron. Abstract

Staurolite is regarded as a waste product in the technology that is used to process kyanite ores. Studies were made of features of the carbothermic reduction of the ferruginous and alumosilicate parts of a charge containing staurolite concentrate. Reactions that take place in the system Al2O3–SiO2–FeO–C result in the in situ formation of silicon carbide and iron.
