Taparowsky Department of Biological Sciences, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907-1392, USA Received: 22 December 1997 / Accepted: 29 May 1998 The human B-ATF cDNA was isolated originally from an Epstein- Barr virus (EBV)-stimulated B lymphocyte cDNA library (Dorsey et al. 1995). Subsequent analysis of a variety of human tissues and cell lines revealed exclusive expression of the estimated 940-base B-ATF mRNA in tissues of hematopoietic origin, with the highest levels detected in EBV-positive human B cell lines such as Raji Burkitt’s lymphoma (Dorsey et al. 1995) and 721 (Fig. 1A; Dorsey et al. 1995). EBV-negative human B cells, including the BJAB cell line and primary human B lymphocytes, do not express B-ATF until infected with biologically active EBV (Fig. 1A and data not shown). Recent studies from the lab demonstrate that within 24 h of infecting resting human B cells with biologically active EBV, B-ATF mRNA is induced 25-fold, suggesting that the induction of http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Mammalian Genome Springer Journals
