Subsequent analysis of a variety of human tissues and cell lines revealed exclusive expression of the estimated 940-base B-ATF mRNA in tissues of hematopoietic origin, with the highest levels detected in EBV-positive human B cell lines such as Raji Burkitt’s lymphoma (Dorsey et al. 1995) and 721 (Fig. 1A; Dorsey et al. 1995). EBV-negative human B cells, including the BJAB cell line and primary human B lymphocytes, do not express B-ATF until infected with biologically active EBV (Fig. 1A and data not shown).
