GENERATION OF LONG WAVES IN A BASIN BY SHORT-TERM DISPLACEMENTS
OF THE LATERAL BOUNDARY

A simplified model of generation of tsunamis by earthquakes occurring on the dry land is proposed. The
transfer of horizontal momenta to the liquid medium is realized via the horizontal displacements of the
vertical lateral boundary according to a given time law. The problem is solved by the method of finite
differences for elastic and inelastic displacements of the lateral boundary of the basin. The efficiency of
the process of generation of tsunami-type waves by similar external disturbances is analyzed. It is
shown that the efficiency of generation of the surface waves by the elastic displacements of the lateral
boundaries of the basin is much higher than that in the case of displacements of the boundary with resid-

The sources of the generation of tsunami waves (regarded as one of possible types of the surface long waves
in the World Ocean) are fairly diverse. Thus, they include underwater earthquakes (seaquakes) [1, 2], as well as
the slides , falls of rocks , intense atmospheric disturbances (meteotsunami) [4, 5], etc., initiated by these
seaquakes. At the same time, there are some known events of tsunamis generated by earthquakes with epicen-
ters on the dry land. As applied to the Black Sea, this is the catastrophic Erzindzhan earthquake of December
26, 1939 with a magnitude of 8. Its epicenter was located on the dry land at a distance of about 150 km from the
northeast coast of Turkey. The tsunami was instrumentally recorded at several points of the Caucasian and Cri-
mean parts of the Black-Sea coast .
It is clear that the generation of tsunamis by earthquakes with epicenters on the dry land is connected with
the transfer of horizontal momenta to the liquid, e.g., as a result of horizontal shifts of the steep areas of the bot-
tom surface or underwater slopes.
In what follows, we consider a simplified model of generation of tsunami-type long waves in the case where
the horizontal momentum is transferred to the liquid for relatively short-term horizontal displacements of the
vertical lateral wall of the basin. For these external actions upon the liquid, we analyze (within the framework of
the two-dimensional problem) the efficiency of generation of tsunami waves by this mechanism, and its depend-
ence on the parameters of the model.
