Foreword The late Mr. Toyosaburo TANIGUCHI FOREWORD In honor of the distinguished contributions the late MR. TOYOSABURO TANIGUCHI has made to the advancement of science as well as to international relations, we hereby present this collection of works on "Approaches in Environmentally Harmonious Catalysis" by the participants of the 17th International Conference on Catalysis which was supported by the Taniguchi Foundation and held from November 1 st - 7th, 1998, in Sanda City near Kobe. The late MR. TOYOSABURO TANIGUCHI, the former board chairman of the Toyobo Corporation, established the Taniguchi Foundation over seventy years ago in 1929 with his personal funds in order to promote research in the various fields of basic science as well as to further mutual understanding and friendships through the close exchange of ideas and research on ah international level. Through his long and often arduous personal experiences in US-Japan trade negotiations for textiles, it became Mr. Taniguchi's beliefthat international understanding and collaborations that will contribute to the prosperity and peace of the world can only be attained through close personal exchanges between individuals.
