FEATURES OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS
IN THE FIELD OF BASIC REFRACTORIES

New developments are described from OOO Gruppa Magnezit and OAO Kombinat Magnezit concerning ba
sic refractories, i.e. fluxes, starting mixes, hot repair mixes, backup materials, mortars, etc. A combined
scheme for producing new forms of refractory materials, and also their physicochemical and operating proper
ties are provided.
OOO Gruppa Magnezit occupies a leading position in
the field of basic refractory production. The development
strategy for the group is an increase in product quality as a
result of improving existing and developing new technology,
a reduction in production delays and raw material utilisation
factor. Schemes for producing new and series production are
shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in which there is technologically lim-
ited correct distribution of material and human resources di-
rected at improving refractories and introducing new prod-
ucts whose manufacture is currently 20 – 30% of the total
Slag Modifier. Starting from 2007 OOO Gruppa
Magnezit offers at one stroke several groups and individual
forms of new product that are slag modifiers. The traditional
series of slag modifiers has been supplemented with several
products providing an optimum combination of properties.
The main requirement for fluxes is their rapid dissolution in
metallurgical slags and modification of the latter to the re-
quired composition. Currently, alongside fluxes of periclase
composition (FOM, FMBYZh) in converter production there
has been successful testing of new fluxes FOMI and
Kompakt, that correspond entirely to these specifications.
Brief characteristics of the fluxes are provided in Table 1.
Flux FOMI is prepared by firing raw material by the dry
method in a rotary furnace. The main component of the
charge is a plentiful balanced raw material prepared for com
bined firing with a magnesia-ferrous mixture. The flux
Kompakt is prepared by briquetting starting materials. Com
bined use of these materials and ecologically safe production
technology of the new fluxes leads them to a new level com
pared with other similar products.
Testing of the fluxes in metallurgical enterprises has
shown that they may be used in carrying out converter melts
as slag-forming materials and for applying a slag coating.
The production volume of fluxes is increasing year by year,
