EFFICIENT REFRACTORY MATERIALS FOR METALLURGY
AND CASTING PRODUCTION

Information is provided about an assortment of unmolded refractory products used in ferrous metallurgy and
casting production. The governing role of scientifically applied theoretical bases in creating new wear-resis
tant refractories and molded materials is demonstrated. A typical example is considered of methodology for
continuous improvement in quality and operating life of magnesia-carbon mixes for permanent torcreting of
local lining areas of a 350-ton OAO MMK converter.

The specific activities of OOO NPO VOSTIO-Ural,
formed at the start of 2001, are aimed at long-term prospects
of creation and maintenance of a working reputation.
Leading colleagues of the Eastern Institute of Refractories:
Professor V. A. Perepelitsyn, Yu. S. Toropov, V. G. Flyagin,
T. É. Khairov, gave invaluable consultation services in the
first stage of establishing production, providing a high scien-
tific and technical level for functioning of the enterprise.
Currently it produces unmolded refractories; the annual vol
ume of output is more than 10,000 tons. The basis of the en
terprise development strategy is close and mutually benefi
cial cooperation with users in the field of improving product
quality, research and development of their own laboratory
with participation of academic, branch, and scientific organi
zations, and higher education establishments of Ekaterin
burg; Institute of Solid Chemistry of the Russian Academy of
Sciences, Ural Institute of Metals, Uralmekhanobr, Ural
Mining and geological University, B. N. El’tsyn URFU, etc.
Use of multifunctional contemporary equipment with exis
tence of their own patented processing developments makes
it possible to react to the requests of users and to produce
high quality competitive products for ferrous metallurgy and
engineering (Table 1).
Customers for OOO NPO VOSTIO-Ural products are:
OAO Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine (OAO MMK),
OAO Sevestal’, OAO Izhorsk Plants, OAO Izhstal’, and
many others. Industrial testing of refractory mixes in planned
in OAO Novolipetsk Metallurgical Combine.
New wear-resistant refractory unmolded materials and
antiburning facing mixes are being developed on the basis of
the main rules and features of applied refractory material sci-
ence. They include the following main scientific assump-
tions: functional classification of physicochemical properties
of high-temperature materials, methodology of regulating the
constitution of refractory composites, a series of relatively
wear-resistant refractories, reaction thermodynamics for lin
ing (mineral) components for molding mixes with reagents
for heating units; genetic types of refractory wear mecha
nism and molding materials in service, an algorithm for cre
ation for effective composites for specific application condi
tions (temperature regime, composition, concentration of liq
uid, solids, gaseous and corrosive agents).
The scientific basis of refractory material science (stone
practice) are fundamental theoretical assumptions for a series
of combined sciences for a mineral substance: mineralogy,
petrography, lithology, crystallography, crystal chemistry, in
organic and organic, physical, and colloidal chemistry, solid
physics and chemistry, physicochemical mechanics, geo
chemistry, refractory technology, metallurgy, petrography,
and other technological disciplines. On the basis of achieving
combined sciences, we have formulated on the basis of many
