The advantage is demonstrated of container firing of large billets of electrode graphite compared with the traditional firing method for such billets in carbon packing, distinguished by considerable thermal inertia as a result of low thermal conductivity. Firing in containers makes in possible to increase billet uniformity and reduce the level of their defects as a result of reducing temperature drops provided by the high thermal conductivity of steel from which the container is manufactured. An increase in billet uniformity in this case is convincingly demonstrated by ultrasonic studies.
