Clinical retrospective reviews inform us in a different, but uniquely illuminating, way about the effectiveness of treatment. While perhaps not satisfying those who worship at the alter of the double-blind, such data, so often neglected or simply not obtained, represent a huge base from which we clinicians draw sustenance. No double-blind controlled study has unequivocally demonstrated the value of penicillin in pneumonia or of gastrectomy for ulcers, but that has not prevented those approaches from being used worldwide. Few would argue for untreated control groups in those medical conditions. The same is true in our field as well. More efforts such as Dwyer's are as needed as sunshine on a drizzly Oregon winter's day. Barry M. Abstract

Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment, Vol. 9, No. 2, 1997 Dr. Margretta Dwyer has courageously allowed us to include in this special edition her long-term follow-up of treated sexual offenders in Minnesota. Barry M. Maletzky, M.D. Editor-in-Chief 1079-0632/97/0400-014751~ 9 1997 Plenum Publishing Corporation
