With the mounting emphasis in the US healthcare system on patient safety and the quality of care provided, quality improvement (QI) education has become essential for medical trainees. QI education models vary among residency programs, yet there is currently no “gold standard.” Described here is a QI curriculum that is longitudinal, extending throughout residency, with repetitive yearly cycles of workshops, learning modules, and self-defined QI projects. Residents work in teams with a faculty mentor to complete yearly QI projects, which produces both faculty and residents who have practical knowledge of how to identify and solve system-level problems.
