However, the rapid appearance of resistance among pathogens towards the available antibiotics is still a most important cause of death [1, 2]. Many infectious diseases caused by bacteria and fungi have remained a major universal health problem due to the rapid development of resistance to the existing antimicrobial drugs [3]. Hence, there is a fundamental requirement for the search for novel and more effective antimicrobial agents. Sulfonamides are a prominent class of pharmaceutically operational motifs exhibiting a wide variety of biological activities [4, 5] such as antifungal, antibacterial [6], anticarbonic anhydrase [7, 8], high-ceiling diuretic [9], hypoglycemic, antithyroid, anti-inflammatory [10, 11], antiglaucoma, antiviral, antineoplasic, etc. [12]. Furthermore, sulfonamides are energetic functional groups with widespread utility in agriculture, dyes and organic materials [5]. Considering all the activities of this class of compounds, they have been looked at as ‘‘privileged structures’’ in medicinal chemistry [13–15].
