A criterial approach for description of thermal stability of layered ceramics is outlined and a qualitative model for improving thermal stability is proposed. The model is based on the use of fragmented, rather than monolithic, ceramic structure elements with an organized macrostructure of the base layer. To illustrate the applicability of the model, the performance of containers assembled of layered quartz ceramics with two-sided Nb2O5 protective coatings is considered.
