The GPIIb/IIIa complex plays a primary role in platelet aggregation. Monoclonal antibodies to GPIIb/GPIIIa block aggregation, and Glanzmann’s thrombasthenic platelets lacking these Gps do not aggregate (Kunicki and Newman 1992). Mature GPIIIa (b subunit) is approximately 90 kDa in size, and GPIIb (a subunit) is approximately 145 kDa in size and contains nine sulfide bonds evenly spaced throughout its length. In addition, GPIIb and GPIIIa were designated as members of the integrin family (Hynes 1992).
