Clarithromycin/moxifloxacin

Clarithromycin/moxifloxacin Reactions 1680, p92 - 2 Dec 2017 Gastrointestinal side-effects: case report A 40-year-old woman developed gastrointestinal side effects during treatment with clarithromycin and moxifloxacin [duration of treatment to reaction onset and outcome not stated]. The woman, who had blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm of the left breast, was admitted for chemotherapy. She developed fever, oral mucositis and neutropenia. She was treated with various broad-spectrum antibiotics. Thereafter, she developed oral candidiasis-like white patches over the tongue, which was treated with various antifungals. However, aggravation of glossal lession was observed. The surface of tongue had dark purplish oedematous mucosa and thick pseudomembranous white plaques. The swab culture revealed the presence of Mycobacterium abscessus. She then received treatment with azithromycin, amikacin, imipenem and moxifloxacin for 10 days. Improvement in glossal lesion was observed. She then received oral therapy consisting clarithromycin 500mg twice a day and moxifloxacin 400mg four times a day. However, she developed gastrointestinal side-effects, attributed to the oral antibiotics. Author comment: "(S)he was prescribed the oral antibiotics clarithromycin (500 mg twice a day) and moxifloxacin (400 mg four times a day), she could not tolerate them because of gastrointestinal side- effects."
