Results are reported of a study of mechanisms by which an ensemble of nanosize dispersed cadmium telluride particles nucleates on a substrate cooled to a low temperature (down to 77 K) in a synthesis in a vacuum from the vapor phase. Condensation curves, distribution functions, electron diffraction patterns, and micrographs are presented. A model is suggested that satisfactorily accounts for the revealed experimental facts by nucleation of 3D islands on the polymolecular adsorbate layer due to the relaxation of its chemical energy.
