JUBILEES OF THE ZOOLOGICAL INSTITUTE Cased in Armor (On the 60th Anniversary of B. I. Sirenko) The professional interests of Sirenko developed quite late. He was born on July 7, 1942, into a family of a military man. His childhood passed in continuous travel, from Voronezh Province to Kaliningrad Prov- ince and then to Leningrad Province. Sirenko graduated from school in Leningrad and then entered the Institute of Shipbuilding. However, he dropped the institute as soon as he realized that the education there was of no interest to him. He then worked for some time as a ship- wright and passed through military service, where he was even decorated by ensigns “For Excellence in Mil- itary Training in the Soviet Army” and “Specialist of II Class.” Finally, he understood that his primary interests were related to hydrobiology and entered Leningrad State University, from which he graduated in 1970. In his student years, Sirenko took part in his ﬁrst marine expedition, to the Russian Far East. Thanks to that par- ticular expedition, colleagues from the Far
