The byssus production of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis L. was studied in the laboratory in the presence of the metabolites of the following animals: a predator (a starfish Asterias rubens L.) and several species competing with the mussel in White Sea fouling communities (a bivalve Hiatella arctica L. and a solitary ascidian Styela rustica L.). The byssus threads and attachment plaques produced by each mussel per day were counted. Abstract
