New York: Random House, 1998, 286 pp., $13.95 (paperback). “ ” In a society where adolescent virginity has become an outmode d ideal (p. xxv) andwh ere sexual violence among teen relationships has been popu- larized to be seen as sexy and regarded as acceptable by a disturbing num- ber of teenage girls (p. 190), we have a real crisis at hand. As professor of Women s Studies at Cornell Unive rsity and a feminist historian, Joan Jacobs Brumberg acknowle dges the urgency of addre ssing this current crisis with the recent publication of The Body Project. Her goal is to initiate a multigenerational dialogue that speaks to the reality of earlier maturation, the need for sexual expression, and the nature of contemporary culture (p. 209). More specifically, her wish is that The Body Project will generate discussions leading to the eventual creation of a new sexual ethics in hopes ’ ’ to eradicate our culture s condoning of the rapacious Sex Roles Springer Journals
