Book Reviews Sex Roles‚ Vol. 38‚ Nos. 3/4‚ 1998 Handbook of Diversity Issues in Health Psychology. Edited by Pamela M. Kato and Traci Mann. New York: Plenum Press‚ 1996‚ 439 pp.‚ $69.50 (hardcove r). Health psychology is devoted to unde rstanding the impact of psychological and behavioral factors on physical well-be ing. As a psychological discipline ‚ health psychology investigates health and illne ss using a biopsychosocial model rather than the biomedical model extant in behavioral medicine and public health‚ the other discipline s most likely to examine the individual ’s physical health. The biopsychosocial model acknowledges the complex in- teraction of biological ‚ individual psychological ‚ and social and cultural fac- tors. Until recently‚ much more emphasis has been placed on biological factors and individual psychology rather than on social and cultural factors that mediate health and illness. There is a short but strong tradition of formal theoretical modeling within health psychology incorporating the bi- ology and psychology of the individual (examination of the literature on stress and coping bears this out). Unfortunate ly‚ this research demonstrates a bias toward use of samples composed of White ‚ heterosexual‚ middle- classed men. Researchers in this area acknowledge the importance of class‚ http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Sex Roles Springer Journals
