I found this selection of papers stimulating, thought provoking and challenging in a manner very rare in the field of fisheries management which, despite its immediate importance, seems largely bereft of new, promising ideas. Fisheries Management in Crisis consists of 16 papers, and an introduction and conclusion, arising from a workshop held in Brussels in 1994 on the topic ‘An Agenda for Social Science Research in Fisheries Management’. The book is divided into five themes: ‘The Social Dimension of Fisheries Policy’; ‘Alternative Property Rights Systems’; ‘Social Institutions and Fisheries Management’; ‘Local and Regional Dimensions of Fisheries Policy’; and ‘Fisheries in a Global Food System’. Actually, the book deals almost exclusively with the problems of fisheries management in the European Union, apart from a paper on marine management in coastal Japan, probably included as an example of how things can work.
