The New Civil War: The Psychology, Culture, and Politics of Abortion is a comprehensive guide to one of the most hotly contested issues of our time. Edited by Linda J. Beckman and S. Marie Harvey, perhaps what is most impressive about this colle ction is its exhaustive and thorough nature . Working from a multidisciplinary perspective, the numerous contributing authors examine the sociopolitic al, cultural, and psychological aspects of abortion in the United States. Despite varied backgrounds, the authors all originate from a feminist standpoint and recognize the dire need for the procedure to remain safe and legal, as nearly half of all American women will obtain at least one abortion during their reproductive years. Before the 1973 landmark Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wage, whereby abortion was effectively legalized, women died by the thousands at the hands of back-alle y butche rs.
