Sex Roles, Vol. 37, Nos. 1/2, 1997 The Other Within Us: Feminist Explorations of Women and Aging. Edited by Marilyn Pearsall. Boulder, CO: Westview Press, 1996, 280 pp., $19.50 (paper). Marilyn Pearsall, a published editor/coeditor of two volumes which deal with feminist philosophy and teacher of both women's studies and philoso- phy, has created for the feminist reader a compilation of important writings reprinted from a wide variety of sources. Though differing widely in content and perspective, all relate to a compelling focus: the juxtaposition of the themes of women and aging which, in many chapters, involve the impact of race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, and occupational role on the aging and elderly female. The separate chapters mainly focus on personal crises facing the aging feminist, viewed from various perspectives but por- trayed from the perspective and discipline of the writer. The introduction to the theme of the book is a raw presentation of Simone de Beauvior's description of the older woman, drawn from her book The Coming of Age. The title of Pearsall's book is taken from de Beauvoir's notion that we have another other within us, the older woman who is not ourself, but is the woman
