Book reviews Sex Roles, Vol. 37, Nos. 9/10, 1997 Repairing the Breach: Key Ways to Support Family Life, Reclaim Our Streets, and Rebuild Civil Society in America's Communities. By Na- tional Task Force on African-American Men and Boys. Dillon CO: Al- pine Guild, Inc., 1997, 288 pp., $34.95. The W.H. Kellogg Foundation assembled a group of African American leaders to accomplish two goals regarding African American men and boys: (1) to address problems and symptoms and (2) to recommend solutions. Repairing the Breach is the National Task Force's resulting report. Chaired by Andrew Young, the group focuses the report on African American males because of the disproportionate examples, especially in urban cities, of vul- nerable behaviors exhibited in this population. The Task Force states, "This report.., on African American Men and Boys is the beginning of an ap- proach to repair society's breaches and restore our streets to safety"(p. 7). The authors do a nice job presenting the issues at hand. The book chapters each discuss the plight of African American men and boys in American society. Contextualizing the situation of the population discussed is a good attempt to understand vulnerable behaviors exhibited without blaming the individual.
