As the title of this book implie s, Barbara Okun is writing for the bene® t of clinicians. ``Although we all learn enormously from our clients, remember, it is not the responsibility of clients to educate their therapists. Rather, it is the therapist’ s responsibility to take the initiative for continue d self-aware - ness and learning’ ’ (p. 199). This admonition from the author is one she lives as evide nced by her emphasis on reviewing previous research. She summarizes the stories of 187 familie s she has worked with in therapy and interviews volunte er familie s who have either adopte d/been adopte d/ relinquishe d parental rights, have homosexual partners/parents/childre n, have biracial marriage s/childre n, have multiethnic parents/childre n, repre- sent single parents by choice, are grandpare nts raising children, or are families who have used reproductive technology to conceive.
