Ayala Emmett, a cultural anthropologist, has written a sensitive and sym- pathetic study of the women’s peace movement in Israel. It difficult to write anything scholarly about contemporary Israel that is still true when it is publishe d; by the time it goes to press, it is most like ly out of date. Emmet’s observations took place in 1990 and 1993, before and after the signing of the initial peace agreements between the Israelis and the Palestinians. But the study was completed before the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, leader of the Labor Party, and before the later defeat of that party and return of the Likud Party to government. There is a sense of history here, an awareness of how events can change feelings and actions, but no anticipation of the cataclysmic events that were to come, and that seem so important now. The study attempts to rectify unde rstanding of political processes in a way that feminist studie s have donefor quite sometime,
