We read this book as three women, with very different life stories, all immersed in scholarship on and with the lives of girls and women. And so we were delighted to be invited to review Untold Stories. This is a rich collection of essays on and by women from across racial, ethnic, national, class, sexuality, and language lines. Dedicated to challenging what they consider ‘‘master narratives,’’ the authors gracefully and boldly position women’s lives at the nexus of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, resistance, victimization, courage, fear, laughter, and despair. Not only do they confront dominant understandings of gender, identity, and the body, but even more provocatively, these essays reveal the very gendered and racialized secrets and lies that have glued together oppressive social relations.
