Edited by Norine G. Johnson, Michael C. Roberts, & Judith Worell. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, 1999, 464 pp. $39.95 (hardback); $29.95 (paper). Psychologists have historically described adolescence as a period of storm and stress, and continue to characterize it as a period filled with prob- lems and challenges. The picture they paint tends to be an especially bleak one for girls who face additional problems associated with being female (e.g., eating disorders, pregnancy, diminishing self-concepts, dating violence, and sexual assault). It is onto this canvas that Norine G. Johnson, Michael C. Roberts, and Judith Worell add some brighter and more varied colors in their edited volume, Beyond Appearance: A New Look at Adolescent Girls. The vol- ume contains 16 chapters (authored by 32 scholars), overviews of each of five major organizing sections, and an appendix containing a copy of the research agenda, American Psychological Association Task Force on Ado- lescent Girls: Strengths and Stresses.
