J. Letourneau, “A Comparison of Objective Measures of Sexual Arousal and Interest: Visual Reaction Time and Penile Plethysmography” Dr Letourneau’s article is a major achievement. Abel’s visual reaction time measure has attracted considerable attention, and evaluations by independent re- searchers are an important step in establishing the credibility of promising, new measures. Dr Abel deserves credit for facilitating the independent evaluation. ATSA deserve credit for supporting this research with the 1998 New Investigators Grant. Most important, Dr Letourneau deserves credit for completing a sound re- search project on a timely issue. No study is definitive and there are many questions raised by Dr Letourneau’s study that await further investigation. Nevertheless, the process by which this study was realized reflect ATSA’s commitment to promot- ing empirical research as the foundation for best practices in the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders—a goal of which ATSA members can be justifiably proud.
