This issue of our journal is dedicated to the 100th anniversary since the birth of the great Russian scientist Andrei Nikolaevich Kolmogorov (04/25/1903{10/20/1987). We are proud that Kolmogorov served on our editorial board for seven years, just after the journal Problems of Infor- mation Transmission was created, and that the very rst issue of the rst volume of the journal opened with his article \Three Approaches to the Quantitative De nition of Information," which led to the creation of a new domain in the mathematical science|algorithmic information theory| based on the notion of the Kolmogorov complexity of a nite object. Another article of Kolmogorov, \On the Logical Foundations of Information Theory and Probability Theory," developing the algo- rithmic approach to the foundations of information and probability, was published in our journal in 1969. The number of publications comprising Kolmogorov's contribution to information theory is not large, but his personal participation in the development of information theory itself and in the application of its ideas to other parts of mathematics was quite decisive. Let us end this brief introduction with beautiful words of Pavel Sergeevich Aleksandrov writ- ten for an anniversary of Andrei Nikolaevich: \The exceptional broadness of creative interests of Kolmogorov, the immense range and diversity of the areas of mathematics he developed in dif- ferent periods of his life, distinguish Andrei Nikolaevich among mathematicians not only of our country but of the whole world, and we can frankly say that this gift of his has no equal among contemporary mathematicians."
