OBITUARY Andrei Dar’evich Mirzabekov (October 19, 1937–July 13, 2003) sequent Mirzabekov’s professional career was con- nected with the Institute of Molecular Biology. Work- ing at this Institute, he passed all the way from a senior laboratory assistant to the head of the institute. The out- standing scientists, Academician V.A. Engelhardt and Academician A.A. Baev were Mirzabekov’s mentors. Together with Academician Baev, Mirzabekov initiated and organized the Soviet (later, Russian) State Program “Human Genome.” From 1989 to 1994, Mirzabekov was a deputy chairperson of the Scientiﬁc Board of this program. In 1989–1993, Mirzabekov was the Vice President of the international organization Human Genome and the head of a regional ofﬁce of this orga- nization in Moscow. Mirzabekov was elected a corre- sponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union in 1981 and an academician of the Acad- emy of Sciences of the Soviet Union (at present, the Russian Academy of Sciences) in 1987.
