The advantages of manufacturing technology and operation of block lining of skid pipes and walking beams
of a heating furnace are presented. The economic desirability of selecting this type of lining is explained.

Refractory block insulation of skid pipes and walking
beams is used in heating furnaces throughout the world. Due
to the reliability, convenience of assembly and safety of
block lining it has acquired wide popularity and made its
contribution to increasing the competitive capacity and earn-
ing capacity of rolling production. This quite popular and ef-
fective solution is cheaper with respect to capital investment
of analogs, competing with block two-layer lining, such as
traditional brick laying (in the case of insulating vertical
pipes), fiber insulation, single- and two-layer refractory lin
ings. The principle of refractory block installation was pre
sented to the overseas market in the second half of the last
century. Block lining appears to be more reliable, conve
nient, safe and importantly more economically suitable than

The lining of skid pipes and walking beams of heating
furnaces are subject to the destructive action of four main
– high-temperature flames;
– vibration-dynamic and shock loads;
– scale and molten slag;
– drop in temperature
Consequently, wear of a lining may be prevented with
the use of refractories with sufficient refractoriness, mechan
ical strength, scaling resistance, thermal stability over a pro-
longed period. These properties are exhibited by block insu-
lation refractory produced by Keralit.
CONFIGURATION OF KERALIT
REFRACTORY BLOCK INSULATION
Refractory block insulation produced by Keralit is a re-
fractory-insulation system for skid pipes and walking beams
manufactured from individual components, so-called assem
bly blocks . An assembly block is a special type of
“keyed” construction and it consists of two layers. On the in
side ceramic fiber or a component manufactured by vacuum
molding, and on the outside concrete grade CERALIT CAST
with a low cement content. The Keralit refractory block lin
ing does not require additional anchors, and it rapidly and
easily assembled in situ (Fig. 1).
A lining of piecewise components exhibits lower linear
thermal expansion coefficient and it does not create stresses,
or they are insignificant. In addition, due to use of spacers,
joints are formed that provide sufficient tolerance for expan
