A brief survey of R&D activities carried out at the A. S. Berezhnoi Ukrainian Research Institute for
Refractories (UkrRIR) Joint-Stock Co. is presented aimed at the output of unique high-tech refractory pro
ducts for metallurgical, machine building, glass-making, petrochemical, and other branches of industry. A
wide range of products recently developed and/or commercially available is considered: refractory compo
nents of different size and shape — mullite-corundum, corundum with zircon added, chromium oxide,
periclase-lime-carbon, silicon carbide, zirconia, high-efficient lightweight calcium hexaaluminate and anor
thite-based composites, concrete and ramming mixes of corundum zirconia, mullite-corundum, mullite-silica,
chamotte and silicon carbide composition (low-cement included).
The Ukrainian Research Institute for Refractories
(UkrRIR) was founded in 1927. In May 1995, the UkrRIR
was privatized and became a public joint-stock company. In
1998, the UkrRIR was named after A. S. Berezhnoi, a promi-
nent scientist, full member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sci-
ences, who was for years the head of the UkrRIR and con-
tributed much to its development.
At present, the UkrRIR is the leader in research and de
velopment of refractory technologies in Ukraine.
The UkrRIR has not been in arrears in payment to the
Pension Fund and has had no arrears of wages (the average
wages at the UkrRIR are twice that in Ukraine) or backlog of
payments for energy. Over a long period of time, the UkrRIR
has been able to maintain a favorable financial position, to
stay within the confines of its traditional activities, and even
to increase the amount of R&D work. The success achieved
was due to the fact that the UkrRIR has organized the proper
output of unique high-tech products competitive in quality
and price on the world market, and to its favorable advantage
over other manufacturers in Ukraine and in Russia. This en
sures complete self-financing to the institute.
However, even under these production-oriented condi
tions, the UkrRIR did not relax efforts in the field of research
in comparison to the former Soviet-dominated times. Gradu
ates can continue their education in post-graduate courses
(called aspirantura) set up at the UkrRIR; R&D results can
be published in the proper collection of research papers or
optionally submitted to other domestic or international jour-
nals. The UkrRIR has taken and intends in the future to take
active part in exhibitions, workshops, conferences and sym-
posia. Thus, over the period of 2001 – 2003, the UkrRIR was
a participant in the international R&D conference on refrac-
tories UNITECR’01 (Mexico, 2001), the 45th International
Colloquium on Refractories (Germany, 2002), the interna
tional congress on refractories IREFCON-2002 (India,
2002), the international conference “Technology, raw materi
als and equipment for production of refractories and the use
of new refractories in ferrous and nonferrous metallurgies”
(Russia, 2003), and the 4th International Symposium on
Refractories (China, 2003). In 2003, researchers from
UkrRIR took part in the World Refractory Congress
UNITECR’03 in Osaka (Japan) and the 46th International
Colloquium on Refractories in Aachen (Germany).
Based on Attestation Report results from the Ministry of
Industrial Policy of Ukraine as of 2002, the UkrRIR has the
highest rating among institutes of the Mining and Smelting
Industrial Complex in Ukraine.
Since 1991, the situation has changed drastically. For
merly, all technologies developed at the UkrRIR were trans
ferred to customer enterprises. At present, the UkrRIR in its
status as a self-supporting enterprise has organized the deve
lopment and production of refractory products on its own ba
sis to ensure stable financial position. Statutory obligations
concerning standardization, certification, and metrology in
the refractory industry were legally transferred to the
