The Science of Nature (2018) 105: 14 https://doi.org/10.1007/s00114-018-1542-4 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO REFEREES Sven Thatje Received: 12 January 2018 /Accepted: 16 January 2018 /Published online: 23 February 2018 Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2018 It is the time of year again to thank all peers who helped in assessing scholarly works submitted to the journal in 2017. All articles published in the The Scienec of Nature have been subjected to rigorous peer review. Peer review is a tedious and often time consuming process, but essential for maintaining and further developing scientific standards. In 2017, 510 peers from 50 countries volunteered their time to support the journal, and many have assisted in more than one case. Average time from submission to first decision was only 23 days in 2017. Peer review is not always an enjoyable process, neither for authors nor reviewers, but it does undoubtedly increase the quality of scientific publishing. On average, I seek the views of three independent referees and in many cases the journal’s Associate Editors provide additional reports on manuscripts. Often, referees are willing to again assess revised work, and this adds to the overall commitment to this process. Below is a list of the
