Vladimir Aleksandrovich Tartakovskii was born in Moscow on August 10, 1932. In 1955, he graduated from Lomonosov University in Moscow and went to work at Zelinskii Institute of Organic Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He successfully defended his candidate dissertation in 1959 and doc- toral dissertation in 1966. Tartakovskii was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1987 and an academician of the Rus- sian Academy of Sciences in 1992. The main area of research by Academician Tarta- kovskii is chemistry of nitro compounds and their use in high-energy formulations. The variety of problems that have been solved under Tartakovskii’s supervision and with his participation is extremely wide.
