HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY Academician Vladimir Aleksandrovich Kistyakovskii (to 140th Anniversary of His Birthday) Vladimir Aleksandrovich Kistyakovskii is among the prominent Russian natural scientists of the late XIX and early XX centuries. He made a major contri- bution to the understanding of the nature of electrolyte solutions and to the theory of corrosion and metal pro- tection; he was a versatile physical chemist and elec- trochemist. In 1904 1905, he organized at St. Peters- burg Polytechnic Institute the first Russia’s laboratory of physical chemistry and theoretical electrochemistry, which was excellently equipped for that time. V.A. Kistyakovskii was born on September 30 (October 12), 1865, into the family of a known lawyer, professor of criminal law at Kiev University, Aleksandr Fedorovich Kistyakovskii (1833 1885). A.F. Kistyakovskii descended from a clergyman from Chernigov province. He received his secondary educa- tion at Chernigov theological seminary and graduated from the department of law of Kiev University in 1857.
