HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY ˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝ ˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝˝ AND CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY Academician German Ivanovich Hess (on the 200th Anniversary of His Birthday) Academician German Ivanovich Hess (Germain Henri Hess) made an outstanding contribution to the development of chemical science and teaching of chemistry in higher school institutions of St. Peters- burg in the first half of the XIX century. He carried out comprehensive studies in inorganic and organic chemistry, chemical technology, and mineralogy, and was the first to formulate fundamental concepts of thermochemistry, one of the most important branches of physical chemistry. G.I. Hess was born on July 26 (August 7), 1802, in Geneva. However, soon after his father, and then the whole family, moved to Russia (1805), where G.I. Hess’s parents worked as family tutors. German Hess was well educated at home. His Swiss-born mother, who had a perfect command of German and French, paid much attention to bringing up her son.
