A new geometrical model of the formation of machined surface A geometrical model for describing the ideal profile of a machined surface quantitatively is developed in this study. This model theoretically considers the elastic-plastic deformation in the third deformation zone, which is caused by the extruding and ploughing of the tool flank. The traditional geometrical model of a machined surface is modified by simplifying the surface profile. Owing to the influence of the thermal-mechanical coupling effect, the physical and mechanical properties of plastic materials change during machining. Under the extruding and ploughing effect of the tool flank on the material of the third deformation zone, elastic deformation is accompanied by plastic deformation. The original profile is replaced by a layer of plastic deformation, which forms the new layer of the machined surface. Instead of the traditional machined surface model, the geometrical model developed in this study describes this newly machined surface profile. The roughness of the machined surface was measured after a cylindrical dry turning of stainless steel.
