Mokronosov was born on June 14, 1928, in the set- tlement of Luch near the village of Lenevka, Rezhevsk raion, Sverdlovsk oblast, to the family of Trofim Ivanovich Mokronosov, a provincial agronomist, and his wife, Evdokiya Polikarpovna. His childhood coin- cided with the wonderful period during which the coun- try made a breakthrough to its outstanding achieve- ments. This was the time of discovery and development of rich mineral deposits in the European North of the country and Siberia, the heroic nonstop flights over the North Pole, the drifting polar stations, and the research and rescue expeditions along the Northern Sea Route.
