Data now suggests, however, that many vitamin needs in crease wit h advanci ng age ( Ru ssell & Suter, 1993). The controversy is confound ed by the fact that there are few large studies of vit am in requirements in the elderly. The elderly comprise a hete rogeneous group, in which chronological and biological age are often di sparate; whether it is possib le to incorpo rate this variab ili ty in to broadly useful recommendations for vitam in re qu irements rema in s unclear. The latest Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), published in 1989, include, as have earli er ed iti ons, a ll person s above 5 1 years of age as one category (Tab le 7. 1) (Food and Nutr iti on Board, 1989).
