(https://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/History/default.htm) TheUnitedStatesFoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)website“TheHistory of the FDA’s Fight for Consumer Protection and Public Health,” follows the changingscaleandscopeoftheagencyfromitsrootsinagriculturalchemical testinginthelate1840s,throughthevastexpansionofregulatorypowersfrom the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, to the many roles it plays today. The site contains a trove of primary and secondary source materials; photographs, videos, oral histories, legal documents, digitized exhibits, and essays demonstrate the agency’s long-term focus on consumer protection and publichealth. Theshiningstarofthiswebsiteisitscollectionofhistoricalimages,which containsover250imagesofartifacts,ephemera,photographs,andothermate- rialsfromtheagency’sarchives.Housedontheonlinephotomanagementand sharingplatformFlickr,the FDAHistoryphotoalbumprovidessnapshotsinto theproducts,events,people,andpoliciesthathaveshapedtheagency’sdevel- opment.¹Thehighqualityimagesanddetailedcaptionsallowthecollectionto reach professional and amateur historians, educators, and students alike. The historicalcontextanddepthprovidedintheimagedescriptionsareanexciting introduction for undergraduate or graduate students to the history of public health,consumerprotection,andUSgovernmentregulations. Videos from the FDA’s archives are another an important component of a series of videos on the FDA site. The From the FDA Vault videos highlight products and materials the agency has sought to remove from the market, as wellastoolsandtechnologiesthathavecontributedtothesurveillanceofcon- sumerproducts.Theseshort,digestibleclipsemphasizethesuccesses,failures, and limitations of the FDA as a regulatory body, and work well as an intro- ductorydeviceforanyoneunfamiliarwiththeagency’shistoryandmission.² In addition to media content, the FDA site contains links to a variety of primary source texts of interest to consumers and researchers. The press releases, warning letters, and consumer updates are more current in nature, and they will be most useful to researchers or other individuals
