With advances in treatment, cancer as a disease has changed from being an acute and terminal condition to being a chronic condition with periods of acute problems. Optimal health care for people with cancer, whether the intent of the care is curative or supportive, requires specialized knowledge and skills delivered by nurses who understand the person's position within the cancer experience. Although cancer is an old problem, the specialty of oncology nursing is of relatively recent origin. Interest in this specialization closely parallels the advancing technologies that have led to an increase both in cancer cure rates and in overall survival time. This chapter is focused on the research guiding the process of development in oncology nursing education during the past sev- eral decades. 168 RESEARCH OM NURSING EDUCATION Data for this review were collected through the use of computerized lit- erature searches (Silverplatter, MEDLINE).
