HARRIS Mayo School of Health Related Services ]OAN HU NZIKER-DEAN Mayo Clinic At the turn of the twenierh century, anesthetist Florence Henderson was among a small group of nurses who dedicated their lives to rhe art of delivering anesthes ia. These nurses contributed to the development of ether administra­ tion techniques and established assessment criteria for the anesthetized pa­ tient . By improving surgical conditions they enabled the surgeons of the time ro significandy advance surgical techniques. At a time when many patients feared anesthesia more chan che surgery itself, these skilled nurses calmed patient fears and administered anesthetics with remarkable proficiency. This exploration of Henderson's life and work contains background informatio n abour her fami ly and early years, her education, her leadership roles, her pub li cations , and her professional development . Included is a historical reco rd and analysis of the time in which her pio neering effons in anesthesia took place.
