Lighmer (Carbondale, Ill.: Southern Illinois University Press, 1999) This book is an interesting addition to several recent historical analyses of the life and reform work of Dorothea Dix which have appeared during the latter half of the nineties . Dorothea Dix is famous for her personal crusade in the mid­ nineteenth century ro reform the care of the mentally ill in the United Stares. She zealously traveled through all the states to inspect existing facilities in which the mentally ill were usually kept : penitentiaries, prisons, jails, poorhouses, and family homes. Her vivid and detailed descriptions of the poor and inhumane living conditions of the mentally ill in these facilities served-often success­ fully-to win over politicians and legislators to the idea ofbuilding stare asylums to provide proper treatment and possibly cure the mentally ilL Lightner analyzes Dix's travel and reform work in Illinois and seeks to rescue some of her Illinois documents from obscuriry. The book includes an illustrated collection of annotated memorials and newspaper ani des written by Dix while on her journey in Illinois in 1846-47.
